Sheriff Mike Neal, Chief Deputy John Argo and the entire Rhea County Sheriff’s Department would like to congratulate Captain Melba Huffman on being named Deputy of the Year by the American Legion. Melba goes above and beyond for our Department and County everyday. Congratulations Melba! We are proud to have you on our team.
“I am honored to present Melba Huffman for the 2024 Deputy of the Year award. With an impressive career spanning 30 years at the Rhea County Sheriff’s Department, Melba began her journey on September 1, 1995, and has advanced from a jailer to her current role as Jail Administrator. Her exceptional service was recognized when she received the 2022 Jail Administrator of the Year award from the Tennessee Corrections Institute.
Melba exemplifies the leadership and commitment that every sheriff seeks in their team. Our previous facility faced significant overcrowding issues, originally designed for 87 inmates but housing inmates, exceeding capacity by approximately 130%. These challenges affected both inmate welfare and staff morale. Melba was instrumental in addressing these issues, leading the planning and successful execution of a project to construct a new, larger facility.
During the planning, construction, and opening of our new facility in March 2021, I had the privilege of working closely with Melba. I observed her evolution from initial uncertainty about managing the construction site to confidently overseeing the operations of our enhanced jail. This transformation reflects her adaptability, resilience, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Melba consistently demonstrates genuine care for her colleagues and the community she serves.
In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Melba is actively involved in the Sheriff’s Department Toy Drive, dedicating her time year-round to fundraising efforts that support underprivileged families and children in Rhea County. Last year alone, this initiative provided gifts to almost 800 children.
In summary, Melba Huffman’s exceptional leadership, steadfast dedication, problem-solving abilities, and compassionate nature make her an outstanding candidate for the 2024 Deputy of the Year award. Her invaluable contributions to the Rhea County Sheriff’s Department and our community cannot be overstated.” – Sheriff Mike Neal
